Characteristics of a thesis statement:
Sums up the main points of your paper
1 or 2 sentences long
Appears at the end of your introduction
You should keep it in mind throughout the writing process to stay on topic.
3 parts that make up a great thesis:
Mention the main topic of your paper
Take a position and state your argument
Summarize the evidence you'll use to support your argument
3 steps to write a strong thesis:
Write an answer to your research question as an initial thesis statement
Develop and refine your thesis statement as you collect more evidence and sources
The final thesis should be elaborate and summarize the overall argument
The best thesis statements are concise, disputable, and coherent.
Refer to the video for an example of the process. Â
Write quick summary sentences or phrases for every point in each paragraph
At this stage, you should already have an initial thesis statement or argument
Group your ideas and identify themes
Focus on building a coherent argument, not listing everything you know about the topic
Consider the order of points for your argument:
Is there an obvious starting point?
Do some points need to be set up by discussing other points first?
Is there one subject that provides an easy transition into another?
Refer to the video for an example of the process. Â
