"Tools designed to measure standards-aligned content knowledge and skills, analyze and inform proficiency levels of both student learning and delivery of instruction that further guides the development of teaching and learning."
Assessments are designed to measure standards-aligned content knowledge and skills, which educators use to analyze proficiency levels of student learning, inform delivery of instruction, and guide the development of teaching and learning.
Formative assessments are used to measure student learning progress:
Formal formative assessments are planned in advance
Informal formative assessments are given in real time to monitor student levels of understanding, based on observational data
Summative assessments are used to measure student mastery of standards or skills at the end of an instructional unit. Summative assessments can include but are not limited to one of the following forms:
Tests - answering questions and prompts
Product - creating something original
Performance - demonstrating skills through actions
The ACID test is used to ensure assessments are:
Aligned
Clear
Informative
Designed well
Research indicates that using assessment for learning improves student achievement. Researchers Paul Black and Dylan Wiliam found that students taught by teachers who used assessment for learning achieved in six or seven months what would have otherwise taken a year.
Teachers must utilize both formative assessments FOR learning and summative assessments OF learning.
Assessments FOR learning (formative) occur frequently throughout daily lessons and units of study. Teachers and students will use assessment results to determine the student's progress toward mastery and make adjustments to teaching and learning.
Assessments OF learning (summative) occur at the end of an instructional unit of one or more standards or skills. Teachers and students will use assessment results to determine the student’s level of mastery and to support continued growth.
Use multiple types of assessments, both formative and summative
Create assessments prior to the beginning of the instructional unit when appropriate
Reflect on assessment data to monitor and adjust instructional practices
Use assessments to provide actionable and timely feedback to students
Use the ACID test to develop or analyze assessments
Able to communicate the learning targets of the unit assessment(s)
Use feedback to identify academic and behavioral changes needed to reach mastery
Reflect on assessment data to monitor and adjust behavioral and academic practices
Set learning goals and monitor progress toward mastery
