AAC Workshop
We learned all about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and communication disorders, exploring how AAC supports individuals who have difficulty using verbal speech as their primary form of communication. We discussed the foundations of AAC, including the difference between unaided systems (such as gestures and sign language) and aided systems (such as picture boards, communication books, and speech-generating devices). We also examined how AAC can be used to supplement speech or serve as a primary mode of communication, depending on an individual’s needs.

What an amazing morning at Roger Williams Park, for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s! Through our t-shirt fundraiser, we raised $510, and together we contributed $2,295 toward the fight to end Alzheimer’s! As NSSLHA chapter members, CMD students, and future professionals, we should all support policies that keep the prices of higher education affordable and accessible!! Thank you RISHA President, Allan Shaw, and RISHA Board Member, Rebecca Hockhousen, for taking the time to speak to our members about how important it is to advocate not only for our clients and our profession, but for ourselves as future SLPs and Audiologists!

We hosted a food drive collecting non-perishable foods and household items to support local families in need — it was incredible to see everyone come together to give back.
We also held a Chipotle fundraiser, where 25% of sales from participants using our code or flyer were donated to the URI Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association. It was a great way to support our organization while engaging the community!

For our Friendsgiving, we came together to celebrate the season and collaborate on a candy sale! It was a fun way to connect, work as a team, and spread some sweet holiday cheer.

We hosted a Resume Workshop with guest speaker Chelsea Lenhart, Career Education Specialist for CMD majors through the CCEE! Attendees had the opportunity to strengthen and polish their resumes, gain valuable tips, and learn resources to help them stand out for jobs, internships, and graduate school.

We hosted study hours to help students prepare for finals by offering guidance and support. It was a great opportunity to share knowledge, answer questions, and help peers feel more confident heading into exams!

We kicked off the new year with goal-setting bingo and a special activity to write letters to our future selves! It was a fun and interactive way to reflect, set intentions, and start 2026 with purpose.

The Graduate Student Panel gave members the opportunity to hear directly from current graduate students in Communication Disorders programs. Panelists share their experiences with applications, coursework, and life in graduate school while offering advice for students interested in pursuing a future in speech-language pathology.

Meg Simione hosted an informative presentation on swallowing therapy. Students learned about clinical techniques, patient care, and real-world experiences in dysphagia management while gaining insight into this specialized area of communication sciences and disorders.

Our members had an amazing time participating in the Imagine Walk at Goddard Memorial State Park in support of The Autism Project! It was such a meaningful experience to come together as a community to spread awareness. We are proud to have taken part in such an inspiring event!

We wrapped up the year with our e-board elections and end-of-the-year celebration for our seniors! It was a great opportunity to reflect on an amazing year, celebrate our graduating members, and welcome the new leadership team for the future of URI Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
