There are a variety of reasons a student might need to see a social worker. In general, it is a good idea to refer students for social work services if their social emotional concerns are impacting their school life. Below is a list of some of the signs that might prompt you to refer a student:
Unexplained drop in class performance
Recent lack of motivation
Unexplained decline in quality of work
Habitual tardiness
Excessive absenteeism
Frequent request to go to the nurse
Sudden changes in physical appearance (weight loss/gain, hygiene changes)
Suspicion of substance abuse (glassy/bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, ect.)
Unusual physical injuries
Negative peer group changes
Defiance of rules
Student outbursts (verbally abusive to adults and/or peers)
Homelessness
