About School Social Work
What is school Social Work?
School social workers are mental health professionals who provide specialized interventions to students. They help bridge the gap between a student’s home and school life as well as support staff in social emotional difficulties that affect their ability to engage with students.
Social Worker Supports:
Help families understand school policies and how to access school services
Evaluate students for special education services
Refer students to outside community resources
Assist in the development of students’ interpersonal skills
Provide individual and group counseling to students
Assess students for emotional functioning, substance abuse, and suicidal concerns
Manage student crisis and help students cope with stressful situations
Support parents in understanding their child’s social and emotional concerns
Collaborate with teachers to create social emotional curriculum
Work with support staff members and administration to provide extra student support when needed
Support teachers in times of crisis
