Tryout Times and Tips from Rhodes Coaches and Student Athletes

Cross Country

Tryouts: The first cross country meeting is usually held at the end of August. Please note that Cross Country is a non-cut sport and everyone is welcome to participate. Also, students may participate in softball and cross country at the same time.

Ms. Stevens: "Push through the initial urge to quit, let the adrenaline take over and I promise you will enjoy the rest of your race."

Rhodes Athletes: "Try your best. Enjoy yourself. Practice running on your own and DRINK LOTS OF WATER!"

Cheer-leading

Tryouts: Cheer-leading tryouts are usually held near the end of November. Individuals may not make the squad depending on the amount of students who try out.

Ms. Mc Vicker: "Be confident, try your best and work on flexibility and stretching. Tryouts are only two days so really focus on learning the tryout routine."

Rhodes Athletes: "Be optimistic, confident, loud and encouraging. Learn your routine and even if you make mistakes keep going!"

Tryouts: Softball tryouts are usually held near the end of August. Individuals may not make the team depending on the amount of students who try out.

Mr. Johnson: "Girls softball requires a mitt so practice catching and throwing with a glove."

Rhodes Athletes: "Don't be afraid to try different positions. Keep your mitt high. Be patient when batting and don't be afraid of the ball."

Volleyball

Tryouts: Volleyball tryouts are usually held near the beginning of October. Individuals may not make the team depending on the amount of students who try out.

Mr. Sheridan: "Don't get frustrated when trying out, almost everyone is learning something new."

Rhodes Athletes: "Be confident and show the coaches you want to be there."

Basketball

Tryouts: Basketball tryouts are usually held near the end of January. Individuals may not make the team depending on the amount of students who try out.

Ms. Collins: "If you have any interest, TRY OUT! Focus on making a "rainbow" and bending at your knees when you shoot."

Rhodes Athletes: "Practice your layups and shooting! Communicate with your teammates, be positive and if you are open, SHOOT! Also, attend the Leyden camps!"

Tryouts: Soccer tryouts are usually held right before or after spring break. Individuals may not make the team depending on the amount of students who try out.

Ms. Prince: "Come to tryouts in shape! Think as you're playing and work to anticipate what is happening in the game. Also, use your left foot!"

Rhodes Athletes: "Be aggressive, don't stop moving and if you can, SHOOT!"

Mr. Sheridan: "Keep your fingers spread out when trying to catch the ball."

Rhodes Athletes: "Practice hitting beforehand, come to tryouts with a position in mind, learn the rules and try out for pitcher."

Tryouts: Soccer tryouts are usually held near the beginning of October. Individuals may not make the team depending on the amount of students who try out.

Ms. Prince: "Come to tryouts in shape! Think as you're playing and work to anticipate what is happening in the game. Also, use your left foot!"

Rhodes Athletes: "Join a team outside of school. Get in shape for tryouts. Practice ball control, passing and being accurate when shooting."

Basketball

Tryouts: Basketball tryouts are usually held near the end of November. Individuals may not make the team depending on the amount of students who try out.

Mr. Johnson: "Come prepared to run. You don't have to be good at everything but you can be good at one thing and still make the team."

Rhodes Athletes: "Practice your dribbling, be aggressive for rebounds, don't be afraid to shoot and don't be afraid to fail."

Tryouts: Volleyball tryouts are usually held near the end of March. Individuals may not make the team depending on the amount of students who try out.

Ms. Sheridan: "Practice your footwork. Accept constructive criticism and don't get frustrated with results."

Rhodes Athletes: "Practice bumping, learn positioning, learn to serve and to set without lifting."
