Geo- Earth; therm- heat... geothermal is literally heat from the Earth!
There are TWO types of geothermal energy: Active and Passive.
Active Geothermal uses magma close to the surface to heat water to make steam needed to produce electricity. These geothermal powerplants are found along some plate boundaries.
Passive Geothermal (also known as geothermal heat pumps) can use used anywhere! Coolant material is piped down into the ground that is a constant temperature and either heated (in the winter) or cooled (in the summer) to heat or cool a building! Cool, huh?
