This course will examine the stages of genocide and address the wider questions of how and why genocides have been carried out in the modern world. An examination of various events in a comparative context including but not limited to Armenian, Cambodian, Rwandan, and Darfur and the discussion of their impact on cultural, political and intellectual developments will be explored. Students will examine moral and ethical dilemmas in effort to examine the notion of humanity and to what extent an understanding of the origin and virulence of genocide challenge societies to be more tolerant, pluralistic and open.
