This is an introductory course designed to familiarize students with the American criminal justice system. Students will develop an understanding of basic aspects of criminal justice by studying criminal law; the history and organization of the police and critical issues in policing such as the criminal court structure, trials and sentencing; and the history and organization of corrections and the prison system. This course emphasizes basic skills in note taking, reading for information and writing informational reports.
Students may earn three (3) college credits for Interpersonal Communication (COM 101) through Eastern Connecticut State University if a “C” or better is earned in the course. Students must register for this opportunity by the deadline and are responsible for all fees. Upon successful completion of the course, students can request a transcript, and credits may be transferable to other institutions. *Grade 10 students requesting to take this course are required to have a school counselor recommendation and a minimum 3.5 overall GPA on a 4.0 GPA scale in order to receive ECSU college credit for this course.
