Knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of citizens is essential to maintaining our democratic way of life. Civics is a course designed to develop and foster an understanding of the American system of government and how values such as freedom, justice and equality impact individual, local, state, national and international decisions. Students will study the foundations of democracy, how local, state and federal governments function and interact, and political participation. As a means of demonstrating how citizens can play an active role in their communities students are required to complete a three hour community service experience in order to earn credit for this course.
