This course will provide students with an introductory foundation to marine science. The ocean covers about 70% of the globe and holds about 97% of the Earth’s water. Oceans play a critical role in our global environment including, but not limited to, feeding billions of people globally, transporting goods globally, providing a significant carbon sink and oxygen source, and driving our climate and weather patterns. However, human activities have negatively impacted ocean environments, altered ocean ecosystem services, and have put a huge strain on this global resource. By understanding the fundamental nature of oceans, students can gain a better understanding of this vital resource and its importance in supporting life on earth.
