This course will focus on the field of genetics and its importance in modern biology. It will build upon the genetics and evolution units of 10th grade biology. Laboratory investigations may include chick embryology and development, Planaria regeneration and stem cells, mating of fruit flies, or the genetic traits of plants. Concepts of Mendelian genetics, understanding DNA replication and protein synthesis, epigenetics and environmental influences on genes, as well as the role of genetic variation in evolutionary biology and species preservation will be covered. The ethics of modern biotechnology and the applications of stem cell research and genetic modification are also an important component of the course. This semester long course is an elective open to both juniors and seniors who have completed and passed general science and CP or Honors biology.
