Advanced Placement Chemistry is equivalent to an introductory college level chemistry course and students can earn up to 8 college credits, depending on the college. It is a rigorous and fast-paced course, which requires a substantial amount of work outside of class; therefore, students are expected to possess independent study skills and a diligent work ethic. Strong writing and math skills are essential as equal emphasis is placed on mathematical calculations and understanding chemical theory. A summer assignment is required, and is critical to students who are taking this as an introductory chemistry class. Topics covered will include stoichiometry, thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, electrochemistry, and acids and bases. The class meets five class periods and two laboratory sections per week; developing lab skills is a vital part of the course. Upon successful completion of the course students will be prepared to take the Advanced Placement Chemistry Exam.
