The aim of the IB Language A: Literature (Standard Level) is to introduce students to a range of texts from different periods, styles and genres. The subject develops in students the ability to engage in close, detailed analysis of individual texts and make relevant connections. Throughout the course the students’ powers of expression, both in oral and written communication will be developed. Students are encouraged to recognise the importance of the contexts in which texts are written and received and are encouraged, through the study of texts, to appreciate the different perspectives of people from other cultures, and how these perspectives construct meaning. Students are encouraged to appreciate the formal, stylistic and aesthetic qualities of texts. It is hoped that the subject will promote in students an enjoyment of, and lifelong interest in, language and literature.
