Course Goals: Students will be able to recognize major pieces of literature, authors, and period shifts in American literature. The student will also be able to identify and complete various types of writing and will practice their knowledge as a part of their daily lives.
Course Description: Pre AP English is based on the study of American literature to prepare students for the AP Literature exam. Students will be asked to explore the literature in depth and are asked to challenge their reactions to the text through discussion and writing.
The Pre Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition course focuses on critical reading and writing skills which are on par with those required for an entry level college literature course; therefore, an AP student should expect a course-load which is much more rigorous than a typical high school English class.
Students enrolled in this course will examine works of predominantly American writers from a variety of genres and time periods. While cursory readings may focus on content and plot, AP students must consider authors’ tone, style, technique, and purpose. AP students must read critically and carefully, usually requiring multiple readings of each selected text. Students must also be able to articulate academic analysis and criticism in writing.
