First Aid / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

Students study the fundamentals of first aid and can gain an accredited first aid certificate from a recognised provider such as The Australian Red Cross. This course is a valuable subject for students not only in their everyday lives but also in their careers. Key areas of study include occupational health and safety issues, emergency procedures and human physiology.

Assessment

• Connections: teaching bandaging skills to primary school students (33.33%)

• Practical exploration: first aid scenarios (33.33%)

• Folio and discussion: ongoing journal and discussion (33.33%)

• The "Provide First Aid 003" certificate is optional.

Additional Details

• There are no specific prerequisites, however a genuine interest in studying first aid is essential.

• If students wish to receive an official Senior First Aid certificate, there will be an additional cost which is dependent on the course provider.

Health A / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

Students develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required to explore and understand influences and make decisions regarding health and wellbeing.  Students will explore and learn about the following areas:

• The concept of holistic health and how external factors and personal choices impact upon it

• Issues around the topic of mental health: possible symptoms, causation and health promotion strategies surrounding this area

• The health issues that are particularly relevant to the Indigenous population of Australia and methods of closing the current health gap

Assessment

• Issues inquiry: Local Health Issue (33.33%)

• Practical Action 1: Mental Health (33.33%)

• Practical Action 2: Indigenous Health (33.33%)

Additional Details

• Students need to be passionate about health topics and issues. There are no essential prerequisites, however completing the Year 10 Health course is recommended as a strong pathway for the Stage 1 and Stage 2 Health courses.  

• If students are considering continuing this area of study at Stage 2 it is recommended that both the A and B course are completed.

Health B / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

Students develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required to explore and understand influences and make decisions regarding health and wellbeing.  Students will explore and learn about the following areas:

• The social determinants of health and how the circumstances in which people are born, grow up, live, work and age can impact people's ability in obtaining and maintaining good health

• Issues around domestic violence and factors that facilitate this issue and the significant impacts it can have on victims

• The concept of health promotion and actions that can be taken to develop it

• Practical Action 2: Health Promotion (33.33%)

• Completion of Health A and a desire to complete Stage 2 Health is a prerequisite.

Physical Education A / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

This course is designed to give students an opportunity to unpack the participation in and performance of human physical activities. It is a theoretical-based subject that incorporates practical lessons to explore their physical capacities and investigate the factors that influence and improve participation and performance outcomes, which lead to greater movement confidence and competence.

Key areas of study can include:

• The interplay of energy systems

• Task constraints and game modifications 

• Biomechanical analysis

• Skill acquisition

• Fitness programming

The students' practical ability IS NOT assessed at any point within this course.

Assessment

• Performance improvement: (50%)

• Physical activity investigation: (50%)

Sports Academy - Volleyball A / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

This course has a strong focus on enhancing their own and the class’s volleyball performance and understanding. Students will use technology to deepen their practical and theoretical understanding of the following areas:

• Skill technique and refinement

• Volleyball specific fitness training

• Effective coaching for middle years students

The students' practical ability IS NOT assessed at any point and there is a considerable theoretical component to the course.

• Practical exploration (25%)

• Connections task (35%)

• Personal venture (40%)

Additional Details

• Students are required to have undertaken Sports Academy Volleyball in previous years or have solid volleyball skills and knowledge. 

• There may be a small cost for excursions to enhance learning experiences.

• SACE Credits: 10 (Stage 1 SACE). 

Sports Academy - Volleyball B / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

This course allows students to develop their understanding of tournament preparation and performance. They are provided with the opportunity to explore volleyball through movement concepts and strategies with a sociocultural lens. The key areas of study include:

• Personal and team tactics

• Volleyball specific tournament nutrition

• Inclusive volleyball (for disabilities and beginners)

The students' practical ability IS NOT assessed at any point and there is a considerable theoretical component to the course.

Assessment

Three summative assessments;

• Practical Exploration  (25%)

• Connections Task (35%)

• Personal Venture  (40%)

Additional Details

• Students are required to have undertaken Sports Academy Volleyball in previous years or have solid volleyball skills and knowledge.

Sports Science / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

Through Sports Science, students develop their knowledge of exercise physiology and the related nutritional requirements of exercise as well as the application of biomechanical principles. Students develop their ability to use that knowledge to identify questions, issues, opportunities and challenges, and the capacity to acquire new knowledge through their own investigations.

• Inquiry folio (75%)

• Collaborative inquiry (25%)

Additional Details

• Students need the numeracy capability to record, collate and interpret a range of data sets and the literacy capability to produce written reports and analysis tasks. 

• There may be a small cost involved for a biomechanics excursion.
