Read to me!

During the preschool years, your child is a learning machine! For success in school, it is important for your child to:

  • Love books and stories
  • Learn about language
  • Learn how to handle books

You can accomplish these learning tasks if you do some simple things.

  • Read bedtime stories.
  • It’s okay to read the same books over and over.
  • Give you child crayons, markers, pens and pencils and plenty of paper.
  • Write messages to your child.
  • Write down your child’s spoken words.
  • Label your child’s possessions.
  • Label objects in your house.
  • Get alphabet books and make alphabet books.
  • Talk with your child. Ask them to tell you about their friends at school.
  • Go to the library often.

Preschoolers need to see that reading and writing are useful and enjoyable things to do!

Reading aloud to your child every day is the single most important thing you can do to help them prepare for reading and learning.
