Some of you may have already heard, but we are being challenged again by the same developers (Lake Lot) who had their permit application withdrawn a few weeks ago. They have re-filed it.
As you recall, they are seeking to build a subdivision of several houses in an area of shoreline, marsh, and water bottoms just past the end of Lewisburg and in the watershed of the Chinchuba Bayou. Our neighborhood, as well as other groups interested in preserving ecologically important land, have consistently opposed this attempted development.
The proposal is to bulkhead and then fill this area, covering up the water bottoms, and eliminating any shoreline whatsoever. There would be no gradual elevation change, no sandy beach, and no marshland leading up to an upland. Rather, the proposal would permanently destroy habitat that has been a sanctuary and breeding ground for birds, fish and other animals for generations and turn it into bulkheaded lots for a few upscale private residences.
The proposed trucking of fill would severely impact use of the neighborhood roads in Lewisburg and Old Golden Shores and the peace and quiet along the route. The project would bring thousands of heavy trucks, filled to their brims with dirt, thundering down our narrow parish road that has no sidewalks and is used routinely by us for walking and bike riding. It will be of benefit only to the developers -- not at all to us, or the public, or the environment. It would particularly bring noise and danger to Northlake Drive, Holly Street, and Copal Street, and would exacerbate traffic problems at the intersection of Monroe and the service Road, Additionally, the creation of these bulkheads and filled land would impact the Bayou Chinchuba watercourse in times of high water, exacerbating flooding and erosion.
