Reflection and questions
Stanley Rayfield is an artist from Richmond, Virginia who is famous for creating hyperrealistic drawings and paintings using shading, value, gradient, and form. Most of Stanley's artwork is inspired by people in his community, and scripture from the Bible.
Stanley Rayfield used pencils to render the drawings below.
Rendering uses shading, value, gradient, and form to make flat drawings look three-dimensional.
Artists use shading, value, gradient and form to render drawings or to draw objects that look real.
Shading is the act of coloring in a shape.
Value is how dark or light a thing appears.
Gradient is the gradual change from one value to another or one color to another
Form is a 3D object or a drawing that shows the illusion of a 3D object.
In your sketchbooks, define shading, value, gradient and form. Draw a small example of each definition.
