Elementary and middle school energizers are classroom-based physical activities that help teachers integrate physical activity with academic concepts. These are short (about 10 minute) activities that classroom teachers can use to provide physical activity to children.
During the school day, children and youth need a “break” from sedentary activities in the classroom. Physical activity breaks meet this need and can increase individuals’ daily physical activity levels.
As high school students navigate more rigorous academic tasks and denser curricular material, the occasional 3-to-5-minute break delivers a wide range of benefits.

Physical activity doesn’t need to be limited to recess or PE. Teachers can use movement breaks—often called brain breaks, energizers, or brain boosters—to energize or calm students at key moments like after lunch or before a test.
