Before a garage door can be installed, the proper framing must be complete for the hardware and tracking to be secured to.
Garage Door Opening
The finished opening for a garage door should be the exact width and height of the door we are installing. Example: a 16x7 door needs to have an opening that is 192" wide and 84" tall.
Good Wood
The Vertical Track and Spring Line need good, solid wood to secure to. The vertical jambs are lined with wood bucks to mount the track to. These wood bucks will go from the floor to ceiling or around 18" above the opening. The header needs to be built in flush with the bucks so the new door can have a nice, tight seal.
**Please Note: We CANNOT secure our track to sheetrock because it will crush. Per manufacturer wind code regulation, we must secure our Jamb Brackets directly to the wood structure.
Head Room & Side Room
A minimum of 3" of Side Room is Required for Standard Hardware and 7" of Side Room is required for Low Head Room. Above the door at the Drums, a minimum of 12.5" is required for standard radius track. Anything less than 8.5" at the Drums may require a Build Down.
Concrete Block
The concrete block is often overlooked when building new construction homes. Our vertical track must be able to go all the way down to the ground. In this photo, we see where a contractor had to notch out the concrete to make room for the track. Don't let that happen to you!
