Step 1: Pass your relevant Praxis exams

After taking an exam complete the Exam Progress Survey. Click on the button below to keep us apprised of your progress.

Step 2: Complete Physiology & Hygiene exam

This is a free 35 question true/false test administered in the county office of education. Contact information and locations of county offices are available on the Department website. You will need to contact the office to schedule testing. When you go to take this exam, bring 2 forms of picture ID. We encourage you to complete this step as soon as possible.

Note: You may be exempt from this exam if you completed a college course such as biology, health, or nutrition.

Step 3: Submit official transcripts

Request and send your official sealed transcripts in one envelope to the following NJDOE address, via certified mail:

Step 4: Submit your CE application to the NJ DOE

Cost: $170

The next step involves applying for your Certificate of Eligibility with the New Jersey Department of Education Teacher Certification Information System (TCIS). Follow this link and start by registering for a TCIS account. Step by step instructions can be found here. following registration, proceed to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility by following the on-screen prompts. The NJDOE must receive your passing Praxis score reports, Physiology and Hygiene test, and official transcripts in order to issue your Certificate of Eligibility.

You will receive an electronic copy of your issued Certificate of Eligibility from the NJDOE. Your Certificate of Eligibility allows your school to register you for your provisional teaching license which is valid for two years.
