The English Department uses a literature-based approach to help students become strong readers, writers, speakers, and thinkers. We believe these skills are essential for students to be productive, responsible citizens and effective communicators in today’s world.

Through reading, writing, and discussion of both fiction and nonfiction, students build the skills they need to communicate clearly, analyze ideas, and think critically. Students learn to write for different audiences and purposes, and to evaluate texts and information thoughtfully.

Our courses encourage students to work both independently and collaboratively as they develop a deeper understanding of themselves and others. Through social, intellectual, and creative learning experiences, we aim to support each student’s unique strengths and inspire a lifelong love of reading and learning.
