Sample Year Plans

Hello, Grade 5 Teachers Across Alberta,

We’d like to share some insights into our approach to developing the Grade 5 Social Studies curriculum. As we created unit plans and lessons, we noticed that many concepts needed to be revisited and reinforced throughout the year in order to fully meet the learning outcomes.

One key example was the Citizenship strand, which we found needed to be integrated throughout both the Time, Continuity and Change and Interactions and Interdependence strands. Because of this, you’ll see that all six of our units are included in the Citizenship section of the curriculum document.

Our long-range plan reflects this spiraling approach and is available for you to use or adapt as needed. We hope this supports your planning and helps ensure a well-rounded learning experience for your students.
