Inspiring Minds, Hearts and Spirits
MR STEPHEN DWYER | June, 2024
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of our College community,
As term two concludes, I look back on a term full of engaging life, faith and learning experiences. It has been a busy term full of excellent teaching and learning experiences and a broad range of co-curricular and sporting activities.
College Musical - Legally Blonde
The College production of Legally Blonde showcased the amazing talents of our Creative Arts students. There is nothing like a musical to bring students and staff together, and this experience often provides the students with life-changing experiences. It is so rewarding to see the joy on the students' faces and their sense of accomplishment. Productions bring out the best in students and can be hugely influential in developing self-confidence and a sense of self-worth, not to mention a host of other life skills. Congratulations to all the students who performed, worked backstage, assisted with sound and lighting, prepared props or assisted in some way to make it such an amazing production. My sincere thanks to all the extraordinary staff who so willingly guided and supported the students. A special thanks to Director/Choreographer Ms Melanie Anderson, Producer/Stage Manager Ms Heather Moyes, Musical Director Ms Kirsty Cairney, Sets Props and Costumes, Mrs Kath Baird, Ms Tracie Axton, Choreography Ms Emily Allegri and for Lights and Sound Mr Michael Keep and Mr Scott Forbes. We are blessed to have amazing staff to support such a broad range of experiences at the College.
NAIDOC Week
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year, to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As a College community we will celebrate NAIDOC Day on August 20. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. We look forward to celebrating as a community together.
Careers Week
In Week Ten we celebrated Careers Week with a week full of engaging activities for our Year 10 students. Throughout the week students participated in sessions and activities to expand their knowledge of career pathways and skills to enhance their suitability for future employment. The students gained indepth knowledge in areas such as careers suitability testing, presentations on various career pathways from both College staff and a broad range of external professionals, work experience information, completing of USI processes for work experience, mock interviews hosted by volunteers in our local community, personal presentations by staff on their life career journey and sessions hosted by our Year 12 student leaders on leadership and service. The feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive where they gained so much career knowledge and skills. My sincere thanks to Mrs Kate Hogan our Careers Advisor and Mrs Dom Nixon our Careers Administration Assistant for their thorough organisation of the week. Thank you also to the many members of our regional community who came to the College to present to the students.
Boarding and Regional Community Visits
Throughout Term 2, we visited various towns and Catholic primary schools in the central and western areas of the state to connect with and engage with our families as partners in education. We have visited Cobar, Wilcannia, Condobolin, Young, Warren, Bourke, Brewarrina, Cowra, West Wyalong, Grenfell, Lake Cargelligo, Temora, Canowindra and Trundle. These visits have been a strategic focus for engaging with and strengthening partnerships with our families, especially our boarding families. Research is very clear that when the school and the family work closely together the student’s outcomes are enhanced. Thank you to all the families who were able to attend functions in these communities.

Enrolments for 2025
We are experiencing very strong enrolments for both day and boarding students. Enrolment interviews for 2025 boarding students have predominantly been completed over the last three weeks for prospective Year 7 boarding students. We aim to inform our boarding families early in Term 3 if their child's enrolment has been accepted. Enrolment interviews for day students will begin early in Term 3. Please note that our maximum enrolment capacity for Years 7 - 10 classes is 180 students for each year level. Currently we have over 180 applications for day student enrolments in Year 7 2025.
As we end the term, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the college staff. Through the everyday learning experiences, the staff bring to life our Marist core mission of forming Good Christians and Good Citizens. Their commitment to their role, to the students, and to each other is extraordinary. There is such depth and breadth in the staff teams at the College who enliven the minds, hearts and spirits of the students in their care. Thanks to:

I wish all the students and their families a safe and restful holiday. Classes will commence for term 3 on Tuesday, July 23.
May St Marcellin Champagant and Mary our Good Mother continue to watch over our community.
We have had another outstanding term with student achievement on display in all aspects of learning. As we enter the holiday period, it is an important time for students to disconnect from the routine of daily school attendance and recharge ready for Term 3. As we come to the end of term, I would like to inform you of our focus at the end of term and areas I would like you to discuss with your child/ren regarding learning and personal presentation.
In 2023, staff developed three areas of expectations to help create a consistent learning environment for our staff and students.
These areas have been introduced to our students as:
Being Ready to Learn - encouraging student participation in all areas of school life.
Being An Active and Empowered Learner - encouraging students to be motivated and resilient to to achieve to their ability
Being Marist - encourages students to be connected to the College through positive relationships with peers, staff and respect for their learning
Each area outlines the expectations and behaviours that will assist students in reaching their potential at Red Bend Catholic College. In our Week 9 Assembly, I spoke to the students about the importance of meeting these expectations and that every individual is responsible for how they present to each class. I encourage you to please read through these expectations with your child/ren and support them to meet each area as they return in Term 3.
At Red Bend Catholic College we are committed to high expectations for student uniform and personal appearance. As we come to the end of term, I ask parents to refamiliarise themselves with our uniform policy to ensure your child/ren return according to the policy. Below are the policies as outlined in the Student Handbook. I have also added some images of acceptable and unacceptable haircuts for our students. I would like to reiterate that students should not have nail polish, fake nails, eyelash extensions or any facial hair. Failure to meet the uniform and personal presentation expectations can lead to consequences including withdrawal from school representation.
We appreciate the support of our families in meeting these expectations. Our partnership and collaboration is important as we seek to create a safe and positive learning environment for all students at Red Bend Catholic College.
Thank you to all students and staff for their excellent work in Term 2. I hope everyone is able to have a restful break and I look forward to welcoming our students back in Term 3.
Year 7 to 10 Semester One Reports
Parents and carers of Year 7 to 10 students will receive their child/ren's semester one report via email. This report provides explicit feedback to parents on their child’s commitment to learning, academic progress and involvement in pastoral care. The report also includes recommendations on areas that students can work on to improve their knowledge and skills.
If you have any questions about your child’s report please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Trish Martin E: dsc@redbendcc.nsw.edu.au.

If you are unable to book an interview in the timeframe you require, please use the option at the bottom of the booking site to ‘Request another time’.
Where possible, it is recommended that your child accompanies you to the conferences.
We look forward to meeting with you on the day and value your support of Red Bend Catholic College.
Year 12
Many Year 12 students will be devoting a lot of time and energy between now and mid to late August completing their HSC Major Work. We wish them well in the completion of their Major Works.
Starting Term 3, week 3, Monday 5 August until Week 4, Friday 16 August, students will be sitting for their Trial exams. The Trial exams assess the students' knowledge and skills in each of their Year 12 Board Developed Courses. The majority of the courses are weighted at 30% of the total school based assessment mark. It is a very important time for Year 12. These exams, by virtue of their title, provide a trial run for the HSC. If the students have studied well they will reap the award of rewarding results.
Please find a link to the exam timetable here.
The College has great confidence in our Year 12 students and their capacity to work hard in preparing for the Trial exams. The students are strongly encouraged to make good use of their Term 2 school holidays, to have an organised study schedule and to dedicate consistent and worthwhile study time to revising course content and completing past HSC style exam papers.
Below you will find a schedule of additional study sessions that teachers are offering throughout the holidays and into the first 2 weeks of term 3. All students are encouraged to attend as many of these as possible in preparation for the Trial exams.
Some ideas to help students study effectively:
Creating summary notes using the syllabus
Answering questions from past papers
Making audio notes
Using colour/visuals
Creating acronyms to help you remember concepts
Using Edrolo/Atomi - video, practice questions, study notes
Re-do past questions

As we come to the end of a busy term, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the activities and events that have kept boarders engaged and active. Saturday sport has been a particular highlight, with our students showing tremendous dedication and sportsmanship (pictured below). It has been a busy time in transporting our teams and spectators to the games. The Union teams have played in Orange, Dubbo, Mudgee, Bathurst and Parkes. My thanks to Mr Grierson for his support and organisation of all our Union players. RBJRL teams have played in Parkes, West Wyalong, Wellington, Canowindra and Cabonne. Thank you to all our parents who have travelled to be part of their son/daughters games and to our Supervisors who have supported the teams and have travelled with them throughout the region.
During the last number of weeks we have experienced a higher number of students becoming unwell in the boarding school. Boarders have been triaged at the Health Centre and our Nursing staff have recommended students to return home or rest in the Health Centre and return to the dorms.
I would like to remind all parents to check uniforms for the commencement of Term 3. Please ensure that your son/ daughter has the correct uniform and all requirements necessary. If students are required to purchase extra uniform items from Gunns Menswear, please let us know if we are able to assist with the pick up of your orders.
During the holidays you will receive academic and boarding reports. It will be an important conversation to have with your son/daughter regarding their progress. As always, support is available to all boarders regarding their academic needs.
Boarders who participate in football training on Tuesdays and Thursdays have the opportunity in Term 3 to complete their study from 3:30 - 4:30 pm in Room 1. All boarders are encouraged to attend study at this time to ensure homework/ assessment tasks are completed. If you wish to discuss tutoring support, please contact the Boarding Coordinator, Ms Jessica Walker, who will be able to explain tutoring support available for all boarders.
Wishing all our boarding families a safe holiday and a wonderful time with your child/ren. Monday 22 July, the Boarding Residences will open at 2:00 pm as we welcome back all our boarders.
Once again, thank you for your continued support. Together, we ensure that Red Bend Catholic College remains a nurturing and a positive environment for our Boarders.
Marist Solidarity Ambassadors Make a Difference
Thanks to our Marist Solidarity Ambassador team of Year 10 and 11 students for raising funds and awareness for Marist schools in Cambodia and Bangladesh through Thursday morning BBQs. The dedicated team included Cooper Holloway, Phoebe Morrison, Callie Godden, Leah Van der Merwe, Immy Ousby, Lachlan Kupkee, and Charlie Pearce.
Each term, we focus on raising awareness and funds for different Marist groups. This year, our efforts support St Marcellin School in Bangladesh, which offers secondary education to children from tea gardens, helping to break the cycle of poverty. The LaValla Project in Cambodia provides education and health services for children with disabilities. For more information on this important organisation, please visit https://www.australianmaristsolidarity.org/
Let us pray that we continue to reflect the love of Christ to bring hope and healing to those in need.
Chisholm
Hi everybody and welcome to the Chisholm Chat!
We would like to introduce ourselves, we are 2024 Chisholm House Captains Katie Crouch and Alice Mattiske with Andrea Varghese as our Liturgy Captain.
This year has been very exciting with both our swimming and athletics carnival just passed. These events have been fantastic with the whole house getting involved celebrating the Chisholm spirit! Throughout the term we also had some mighty Chisholm students involved in the Interschools Cup competition. These students travelled to Orange and Dubbo to compete against James Sheahan Orange and St Johns Dubbo. These days were full of fun and competition, celebrating our school spirit!
In Term 2 Week 6 we had the pleasure of having our Champagnat day! This day was to celebrate our beloved Marcellin Champagnat and everything he accomplished through his lifetime. Students celebrated Mass and then the Champagnat awards were presented. These acknowledged students in our school for their embodiment of the Marist values and their commitment to their schooling life. Shout out to the Chisholm students who received these awards!
Our Creative and Performing Arts Faculty has been thriving with this year's production “Legally Blonde,” and the Year 12 Drama, Music and Art students have been working hard on their major works.
With the HSC on the way Year 12 doesn't have many weeks left to go and with Trials coming up we have been very busy. We wish Year 12 all the best of luck and hope they all succeed. We would also like to welcome our 2 new PC teachers - Mrs Otrupcek taking over Chisholm 5, and Mrs Smith taking over Chisholm 1. Welcome to Chisholm House and thank you for taking on the role.

Year 10 English Excursion
In June a group of Year 10 students, accompanied by Mr Haskell and Mrs Machera, travelled to Orange to attend a performance and workshop of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’.
This performance was staged by a new young company called ‘Shake and Stir’. These three highly talented and innovative actors were able to perform the entire play in just under an hour. With clever use of film and mock interviews with the characters they were able to fill in some of the backstory to the play’s events.
Year 10 study ‘Macbeth’ in Term 3 so this was a not-to-be-missed opportunity for the students to not only have a sneak preview of the play but to also to experience first hand a production by a professional troupe of actors.
Forbes Eisteddfod
In week 9, Year 12 Music students participated in the Forbes Eisteddfod. It was a really positive experience for all students involved, and a valuable chance to receive specialised feedback on their instrument. Legally Blonde the Musical
Legally Blonde Junior is full of exuberance, fun, and catchy hooks that you’ll wake up singing in the middle of the night - trust me, I know! But underneath all the fun - and pink - is a story of persistence, of believing in yourself, and of finding your true purpose in life. Elle Woods is a hero for the modern world. She starts out as a seemingly superficial sorority girl, chasing a man across the country to get him back. Her determination in this task is impressive as she studies and charms her way into Harvard University. But what follows is a journey of self-discovery as Elle learns that her future is much bigger than simply being a wife. I hope everyone who experienced the College production of Legally Blonde left the theatre a little more inclined to dream big, smash stereotypes, and unapologetically be themselves!
Thank you to my colleagues Heather Moyes, Kirsty Cairney, Tracie Axton, Kath Baird, Emily Allegri, Michael Keep, Scott Forbes and Jacqui Grieg. I truly appreciate your passion, creativity and support.
- Miss Melanie Anderson, Director
Real Talk
Our College welcomed Real Talk, a company who, over the past 7 years, present on current issues of life, love, and social media grounded in our Catholic Social Teaching principles.
On Thursday 3rd July, Year 11 listened and participated in a talk with Real Talk Australia. They spoke on the topics of life, love, consent and respectful relationships.
On the Friday 4th July, Years 7 and 9 learnt about Getting Real in the Digital World and Year 9 learnt about Love and Life.
Thank you to the Real Talk team for their ongoing partnership with our College. This was a most valuable opportunity for our young people, to learn about such important topics. For further information on any of their material, please visit https://www.realtalkaustralia.com/seminars-christian

We are thrilled to announce the success of our Open Boys Hockey Team at the recent CCC State Championship held at the Bathurst Hockey Centre. Demonstrating exceptional dedication and skill, our team excelled against opponents from across the state, showcasing the spirit and talent of Red Bend Catholic College.
The championship was organised into two competitive pools, with matches kicking off early the first morning. Our team delivered a strong performance right from the outset, despite having just stepped off the bus and onto the field.
Day 1
Game 1: vs St Francis Xavier's College, Hamilton. Won 9-1
Game 2: vs Mount St Patrick College, Murwillumbah. Won 8-0
Game 3 vs St John's College, Woodlawn. Won 12-1
Day 2
Game 4: vs McAuley Catholic College, Grafton. Won 8-1
The championship culminated in a grand final where our players clinched the title through sheer perseverance and teamwork with a 3-0 victory over MacKillop College, Port Macquarie. This victory not only displayed their hockey skills but also their commendable sportsmanship and team spirit.
Throughout the tournament, our students represented the College well both on and off the field.
JUNIOR BOYS
Team: Hayden Arndel, Dylan White, Harry Yelland, Max Douglass, Cooper Kelly, Lockey Harbidge, Jack Dunford, Jack Chittick, Alfie Rosser, Will Tandy, Will Mathews, Charlie Smith, Fletcher Matthews, Oliver Monkerud, Jack White, Roman Welsh and Mack Pengilly.
Report: The Junior Boys teams campaign began slowly on the dreaded grass field with a match against La Salle Academy, Lithgow. The team's slow start matched with the unfamiliar field saw us concede the first goal of the match, going down early. However, the team quickly regained their footing before cruising home to win the match 4-1, with goals from Dylan White, Hayden Arndell and Harry Yelland.
Our second match was against MacKillop College, Port Macq
uarie where the team dominated possession and space, cruising to a 4-0 victory with goals from Harry Yelland, Cooper Kelly and Hayden Arndell.
The third match was an incredibly even matchup against James Sheahan Catholic College, Orange. After going up early, James Sheahan struck back scoring 3 quick goals putting us on the back foot. However, after a second half tug-of-war and some magic plays from the team we were able to hold on to take first seed in the pool with a 5-4 victory. Goals from Max Douglass, Cooper Kelly and Harry Yelland.
We met MacKillop College again in the semi’s and took a comfortable victory to send us to the grand final for a legendary rematch with James Sheahan. James Sheahan blasted out of the starting block, quickly taking the lead with an impressive goal. Our team regrouped and kept the ball in the opposition half for the majority of the game. We finally scored to even up the match after two disallowed goals. After another trade of blows regular time ended with both teams tied on 2 goals each. Extra time involved dropping off two players from each team every two minutes. We quickly went on the attack and narrowly missed an incredible attempt at goal. However, James Sheahan scored quickly after to end the gruelling contest. The team fell excruciatingly short but should be immensely proud of how they played across the two days, taking home the silver for the tournament. Goals from Harry Yelland and Lockey Harbidge.
OPEN GIRLS
Team: Isla Skinner, Bella Neville, Laura Jones, Georgia Rice, Tia Dunn, Ellie Parker, Bronnie Searl, Sharlia White, Peppa Wiseman, Connie Witherow and Andy Jones.

Game 2: versus St John’s College Woodlawn. Loss 0 - 2
Game 3: versus Santa Sabina College Strathfield. Win 5 - 0 Scorers: Isla Skinner, Laura Jones, Bronnie Searl, Sharlia White and Georgia Rice.
Finally a playoff game against Mount St Patrick College, Murwillumbah saw the team go down 2 - 1. Scorers: Sharlia White
The open girls team displayed their skills and knowledge of hockey on their way through the round matches. It was pleasing to see the girls work so well together as a cohesive team. The girls played well in all games and fought tough in the playoff game, bringing them home in 6th place out of 16 teams for the CCC Carnival. Well done to all the girls, it was certainly a great two days of hockey.
JUNIOR GIRLS
Team: Eilish Neville, Milly Witherow, Izzy McGinnes, Heidi Jones, Miah Cusack, Mia Gorring, Daisy Rice, Zahli Gillingham, Scarlett Lawryk, Emily White, Natasha Wing Yip, Clara Rice, Marley Spedding, Steph McNaughton, Katie Corke and Abbey Fuge.
Day 1
Game 1
RBCC vs McCarthy College, Tamworth 0-4 LOSS
Junior Girls numbers were high this year with 16 Junior girls interested in playing.
Girls faced Tamworth for their first match. The girls played well together with lots of chat from the halves and backs. Emily White and Milly Witherow held the middle pack well and showed real control and understanding of the plays made by Tamworth. Abbey Fuge played goalkeeper for the first time and had an outstanding first game with loads of saves. The girls were finding their feet in new positions and unfortunately went down 4-0.
Game 2
RBCC vs Mackillop College, Port Macquarie 1-1 DRAW
This game the girls came up against Mackillop College, Port Macquarie. The girls had a strong centre pack and great leadership from Eilish Neville, Natasha Wing Yip and Izzy McGinnes in the backs. Junior girls managed to hold the majority of ball possession in the first half with a short pass from Marley Spedding to Heidi Jones on the corner had the girls leading at half time. The girls' play was outstanding in the second half and after a great fight in defence they had one slip past the keeper and ending the game with a 1-1 draw.
Day 2
Game 3
RBCC vs St Scholastica's College, Glebe 1-3 LOSS
The girls faced St Scholastica's College, Glebe. The girls had a great team chat pre game. They all found their spots on the field and played so well together as a team. Our wings Katie Corke, Miah Cusack, Mia Gorring and Stephanie McNaughton had a great game calling the ball and making leads. The girls made Glebe fight hard for their goals but unfortunately went down 3-1.
Game 4
RBCC vs Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College, North Sydney 2-0 WIN
The Girls last game was against Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College, North Sydney for 4th overall position. The game was played on grass and the aim for this game was to just have fun. We had Scarlett Lawryk step up and play goals so Abbey could have a run on the field and with her height behind her she saved loads of goals.
The girls played so well together with lots of smiles and chat on the field. Zahlia Gillingham held her marker and made some great tackles this game. Clara Rice & Daisy Rice were great, despite all their running around in the last 3 games as well as stepping up for senior girls, it didn't stop their burst of energy, great passing to the forwards and chat amongst the team. This helped the girls seal the win and be named 4th overall with a 2-0 win.
Massive congratulations to all the Junior Girls. You all showed great leadership and sportsmanship on and off the field and were great representatives of RBCC.
Reporting an absence and applying for leave
