Letter Names and Sounds

WE LOVE THE BETTER ALPHABET SONG!

Your child has a laminated mat at the back of their folder.  We use these in class everyday at the beginning of the year to make sure we have all of the names and correct sounds learned for all of the letters.  Some letters make more than one sound, especially vowels.  Ask your kindergartener about "sneaky y" who makes three sounds!

We have purchased the song that we sing along to, so we can't share it here, but your child knows it!  The picture links to a video sneak peak of the song if you need to hear the tune.

If you are having your child practice at home with you, make sure they are looking at the letters while they say their names and their correct sounds. We want to use our "eye glue" so we can sing what we see, and sing what we see.  We also use our  "muscle mouths" while using  our lips, tongue,  and teeth to forms our letter sounds correctly.

If your child has mastered all of the sounds, start having them do letter runs where they just say the name or just the sounds of the letters, you can do it to the tune of the regular alphabet song (twinkle twinkle) but challenge them to point and sing the letters out of order!  Maybe start at the bottom, and go backwards, or go down and up the mat, and eventually get to all the letters.  It really is a challenge, but will grow their brain as they improve their automaticity with letter sound recognition.

SO many children love learning letter names and their sounds with Leapfrog's Letter Factory.

We now have multiple copies available to check out as parents FREE from our school library. 🥰

You can sometimes find it free with different  streaming services like ROKU.  I have seen them available online from 7-$10 through target, Walmart, and Amazon.    I HIGHLY recommend this.  Especially for students who start kindergarten with little to no letter names and sounds.

A 6-minute compilation of just the letter names and sounds from the letter factory.

We use this from time to time in class.  This was inspired by Suze Haas Kane's ABC Wall.
