Assignment 1 – Image Capturing Devices
Create a new webpage called '1275 – Assignment 1'
Compare the advantages and disadvantages of the following types of cameras:
Point-and-shoot
Medium Format (classroom cameras)
Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR)
Smart Phone Camera
Assignment #2 - Functions and Format
Create a new web page called '1275 – Assignment 2'
After doing some basic research explain and answer the following:
Describe some of the various features and functions of digital cameras. List and explain them.
Discuss various image file format characteristics and their impact on the quality of the image – e.g. size, compression, resolution, lossless versus non-lossless (discuss at least 4 different file formats)
Assignment #3 – Framing Composition in Photography
Create a new web page called '1275 – Assignment 3'
Take 10 pictures while demonstrating basic rules of composition – balance, repetition, perspective, line, rule of thirds, etc.
Use a log sheet to record technical data. (shutter speed, iso, aperture)
Upload and edit using Photoshop – framing or/and cropping for greater composition by demonstrating the following:
Focal point – Emphasis
Layout – horizontal/vertical
Awareness of background – avoid distractions
Clear focus – well focused, depth of field
Make sure you include the ORIGINAL image side-by-side with the EDITED version.
Assignment 4 - Editing Digital Images
Create a new web page called '1275 – Assignment 4'
Take 20+ new photographs as various subjects, backgrounds, etc.
Using some of these new photographs (20 total); demonstrate through an experimental approach the use of image editing software to complete each of the following a few times each and label which you are emphasizing in each photograph.
Basic tools – e.g. red-eye reduction, crop, straighten, rotate
Change image sizes without distortion
Adjust images – e.g., exposure, contrast, saturation, sharpness, red-eye
Apply effects e.g., sepia, black and white, fade, matte, vignette
Retouch photographs
Create interesting and aesthetically appealing compositions
Make sure you include the ORIGINAL image side-by-side with the EDITED version – and include what tools/techniques were used in editing each photograph.
Assignment 5 - New Technologies
Create a new web page called '1275 – Assignment 5'
Investigate and describe some new technologies (at least 3) the area of photo editing and manipulation; e.g., Global Positioning System (GPS) mapping, facial recognition, creating calendars and books, etc.
Provide some visual examples and explanations.
Assignment 6 - Presentation
Create a new web page called '1275 – Assignment 6'
Create a display of the 8 best photographs you’ve edited and formatted throughout this module, or have taken for this assignment. Again, make sure you include both the ORIGINAL and the EDITED work.
Include a write-up with each photograph which in more detail describes:
Editing techniques used
Why you feel it displays good composition
Technical and creative aspects of the work e.g., quality, focus, uniqueness
Areas of challenge and solutions
Use of tools and equipment
