General Physical Education

(Typically taken in ninth grade)
Per the Minnesota Department of Education, the goal of physical education is to develop physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of physical activity. To fulfill a lifetime of physical activity, a physically literate individual:
Has learned the skills necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities.
Knows the implications and the benefits of involvement in various types of activities.
Participates in regular physical activity.
Is physically fit.
Values physical activity and its contribution to a healthful lifestyle.
This required one credit course facilitates students’ physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development through the cultivation of healthy and active lifestyle choices. Students will be introduced to a variety of team, individual, and lifetime activities with elements of fitness training incorporated into daily lessons.
Sports and Leisure (9-12)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of General Physical Education
This course is designed to expose students to a variety of recreational activities and leisure games. Sports and leisure includes, but is not limited to bags (corn hole), bocce ball, Spikeball, Kan Jam, ladder toss and other games that can be enjoyed throughout one’s lifetime. It may also include fundamentals of meditation, walking, yoga, and other lifetime activities.
Team and Life Sports (9-12)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of General Physical Education
This course is designed to incorporate a full complement of team sports and lifetime sports, with fitness and conditioning exercises being a part of all activities. Team sports includes track, football, softball, volleyball, ultimate team handball, soccer, basketball and floor hockey. Lifetime sports includes badminton, tennis, golf, pickleball and table tennis. Emphasis in all areas is placed on advanced level skills and strategies. This is an elective class where great competition happens through students past experience and knowledge of the activities. Students are evaluated on the demonstration of knowledge of the rules and strategies of the activities through teacher observation and personal fitness assessments.
Nets & Racquets (9-12)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of General Physical Education
Individual, dual, and team activities allow students to work on skills and fundamentals of sports that include a racquet and/or net. These activities include tennis, indoor volleyball, soccer, badminton, pickleball, table tennis, floor hockey and lacrosse.
Fitness and Officiating (9-12)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of General Physical Education
This course is designed to provide an opportunity for students to get fit and at the same time learn skills to earn extra income. Students learn the rules and officiating mechanics of volleyball, basketball, and baseball/softball. Students receive fitness benefits while they compete in the activities and also while they practice the mechanics of officiating. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to officiate at middle school, ninth grade and park and recreation programs.
Weight Training 1 (Beginner) (9-12)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of General Physical Education
This course is intended to teach the students how to use free weights and weight machines to enhance strength, physical fitness, decrease body fat, increase lean muscle mass, and mental discipline through individual weight training program.This course is also designed for students who have had no experience in weight training but wish to learn about this area of fitness and the lifetime benefits to increase their quality of life. Students gain a better understanding of equipment used in order to become a more knowledgeable consumer.
Weight Training 2 (Intermediate) (9-12)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of General Physical Education and Weight Training 1
This is a physical education class intended for those who would like to continue to build on what they have learned in Weight Training 1 (Beginners) Students will continue to practice using "free" weights and weight machines correctly in order to enhance their current level of strength, physical fitness, physical abilities and self-esteem.
Major Course Goals:
Students will learn and be able to: 1) set up their own individualized programs by the end of the semester, 2) work on weight training programs to improve their current level of strength and fitness, 3) demonstrate basic knowledge about the muscular system as it relates to weight training, 4) learn to execute, deadlifts, front squats, hang cleans, power cleans, bench and backs squats along with targeting smaller muscles. Evaluation: 80% of the students grade will be earned through attendance and participation; 20% of grade will be evaluated by practical test on exercise technique of the weight training exercises (bench, power clean, squat) and logging their workload using our Teambuildr Software to track their progression over the course of the semester.
New Moves (9-12)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of General Physical Education
The New Moves class is designed to expose students to fun lifetime physical activities (regardless of skill level) like yoga, pilates, strength training, team building, cardio kickboxing, meditation, and so much more! If you are looking for a course that can help with stress relief, school/life balance, and overall wellness, then this is the course for you!
Special Education Physical Education Assistant (9-12)

Prerequisite: Consent of instructor
This course provides an opportunity for students to assist a physical education teacher in the teaching of a special education student. Evaluation: 75% of the grade is based on participation, attendance and skills; 25% is based on knowledge.
