AN OVERVIEW OF GENERAL ED STUDENT-SPECIFIC CONSULTATION
(FOR STUDENTS WITHOUT EXISTING BEHAVIOR PLANS)
What to expect when collaborating with the BCBA.
ACCESSIBLE
BCBAs can provide student-specific consultation to students without existing behavior plans. Written guardian consent is needed before observing, collecting data, and making recommendations to the team, even if the BCBA is not conducting a formal functional behavior assessment.
INDIVIDUALIZED
Student-specific consultation focuses on the individual student and the support they need to access and benefit from educational opportunities in their learning environment. Recommendations provided will focus on class-wide and/or student-specific interventions.
PRIORITIZES CAPACITY & SUSTAINABILITY
Recommendations aim to increase the classroom teacher and staff's confidence and skills in implementing recommended strategies. The consultant guides the team through a process to prepare, implement, and evaluate the success of recommended strategies or interventions.
SEQUENTIAL PROCESS
INTERVIEW
The consultant will interview the student's teacher(s) and anyone else who can provide information regarding the behaviors of concern.
OBSERVATIONS
The consultant will visit the student's classroom several times to gather
information and collect data on the behaviors of concern, including contexts and conditions that reliably precede or co-occur with the behaviors.
REPORT
The consultant will generate a report that provides baseline data on the behaviors of concern, information about environmental variables contributing to these behaviors, and recommendations for the next steps.
MEETING
The consultant will present the report and recommendations at a meeting with the team, including guardians. Guardians will need to give consent if recommending intervention or further assessment.
PLANNING
The consultant will support the team in planning to implement the recommendations, whether at a class-wide level, student specific level, or both.
IMPLEMENTATION
The team will start using the recommended strategy. The consultant will model the strategy and provide ongoing coaching to promote success. They'll also collect data to monitor if the strategy is working.
Message from Juila Golizio, BCBA
My role is to support teachers and students by providing strategies to help motivate and reinforce appropriate behaviors in school. Classroom routines contribute to a positive learning environment by helping students feel comfortable, safe, and better prepared to focus on educational goals. Creating successful routines is also a recommended antecedent strategy for decreasing the likelihood of disruptive behaviors. Here are some tips for creating classroom routines:
Consistency is key: establish and maintain consistent routines to help students know what to expect each day.
Set clear expectations: clearly communicate your expectations for behavior, participation, and work completion.
Start with simple routines: begin with basic routines and gradually add more as the students become accustomed to them.
Involve students: allow students to have input in creating and adjusting classroom routines to foster ownership and responsibility.
Use visual aids: visual schedules or charts can help students understand the daily routine.
Be flexible: be prepared to adapt routines when necessary, but communicate changes in advance.
Transition smoothly: give clear signals for transitions between activities to minimize disruptions.
Reflect and adjust: periodically review and adjust routines based on what works best for your specific class.

For support with individual students, parent consent is required; a printable consent form in both Spanish and English is included in the above link. Have the parent complete the consent form for observation and upload the sign copy to the referral form. Please reach out to Vero if you would like assistance getting parent consent.
Once steps 1 and 2 are complete, feel free to email me to schedule an observation or consultation time with me.
I look forward to working with you this year! My email is jgolizio.mxm@rcsdk8.net.
