Staffed by The Center for Youth and supported by Ibero
The goals of the HZ are:
build honest relationships with youth
offer youth a place to feel safe and heard
re-engage students in class after a conflict
What are the procedures?
Use de-escalation strategies in the classroom
Call the HZ and write a pass for the student
When the student arrives they are taken through a restorative conversation
Student and HZ staff brainstorm a solution
HZ staff write a pass and/or walk students back to class
Teacher allows student back into class and plans time for a follow-up conversation with the student
All conversations in the HZ are confidential and cannot be discussed without permission from the student
What happened?
What were you thinking at the time?
What have you thought about since then?
Who has been affected? How have they been affected?
What do you need to do to make things right?
These questions help the youth process what happened and take ownership of what they contributed to the situation as well as control over how they find it best to move forward instead of being told how to do it.

At Monroe the Help Zone fully support youth taking the lead by supporting groups of students who have received Restorative Practices training through RocRestorative. These student leaders are known as Roc Responders. They help with restorative conversations, mediations, and push into home base to do restorative activities with their peers.
Throughout the school day the Help Zone Center for Youth and IBERO staff walk the hallways during passing time and join the students during lunch time to play board games and other community building activities.
