The School-to-Prison Pipeline refers to the disproportionate rate at which students and young adults of color are incarcerated as a result of harsh school discipline policies. Schools need to provide pathways to opportunity--not to prison.
Restorative justice in schools can serve as a tool to redirect the pipeline away from students coming into contact with the criminal justice system. By prioritizing relationships, community, and culturally relevant pedagogy, a restorative culture in school can improve educational outcomes and lower suspension rates.
