Sculpture techniques
Students analyzed a variety of sculptures. We discussed how the materials interact with the viewer and the environment. We discussed preservation of the sculpture and the equipment used to create it with various materials.
We examined art by many artists. including Alison Saar, Elizabeth Catlet, Edmonia Lewis, Tyree Guyton ,Charles McGee, Alexander Calder, Frank Hayden, Rochester area artists such Albert Paley, As Well as various sculptures around the city. We discussed how a sculpture could pay tribute or honor someone for their service to mankind and the community. We viewed sculptures of famous Rochestarians such as Frederick Douglas and Susan B. anthony.

Virtual field study during Covid
Students explored sculpture the Memorial Art Gallery has. They learned about local artist Albert Paley and more. Here you see them analyzing Swing Low by Alison Saar. Swing Low is a sculpture representing Harriet Tubman. It has symbolic details. They had an opportunity to be interviewed and describe the impact art has on their lives.

What could be more iconic that donuts?
Donut sculptures were made with a tinfoil armature, covered with tissue that we sprayed a mist onto to dampen it. We used tempera to paint, a glossy glaze and homemade sprinkles ( cut wire)
Food has become part of popular culture. We all know slogans, logos and jingles for products.

Watercolors can be tricky, use less water to control them.
