Common Chromebook Problems

ADAMS STUDENTS! Having problems starting your Chromebook after the Summer Break?

If your Chromebook is not starting up, please try the following steps:

1) Disconnect the Chromebook from the charger, and the charger from the wall, and leave them alone for AT LEAST ten minutes.

2) Press and hold down the Refresh (circular arrow) key and Power key together at the same time for thirty seconds, then release them both.

3) Plug the charger back into the wall and into the Chromebook, and check the LED on the left side of the Chromebook. If it is charging, it should be solid red. If it is flashing red, wait a few minutes until it turns solid red.

4) Try to restart the Chromebook.

5) If it does not start, or the LED does not light up, go back to step 1 and try disconnecting for a longer period. (We have found that sometimes it can take up to 5 days off the charger to get it to respond!!)

6) If it still won't start, please contact me to arrange to pick up a loaner. Loaners will be distributed on the first day of school.

7) If you are unable to sign in, please send me the error message that you get.

BOTTOM LINE: Your Chromebook does not like having its battery completely discharged! This most commonly occurs when the Chromebook is left unattended in sleep mode for an extended period of time. The best practice is to shut down the Chromebook after use and make sure it is fully charged before storing it safely.

Thank you,

Chromebook problems come in two forms: hardware problems (with the Chromebook itself) and software problems (with the programs that you run on the Chromebook). Some problems can be dealt with at home or by your school staff, while others will have to be fixed by the RBUSD IT Department. Many problems can be resolved simply by performing basic maintenance on the Chromebook.

** During the COVID-19 school closures, it is important to try to solve these problems at home first. If you have alternative devices at home with the Chrome browser installed, you can use those instead - the student can login with their RBUSD email and password and see all their work assignments.

If you are unable to fix the problem at home and do not have an acceptable alternative device to use, please contact your teacher (elementary schools) or assigned library/media technician (middle/high schools). Please provide your name and a phone number and/or email address where you can be reached, along with your student’s name, grade and school, Chromebook model and the nature of the problem (include any error messages or a screen capture if possible). A school official will contact you as soon as possible with further instructions. **
