First, check that the Chromebook is charged. (Just because you plugged it in, doesn’t mean it charged!).
If it isn’t, follow How To Charge Your Chromebook. If it hasn’t started charging after a few minutes go to the next step.
Reset the charger. Unplug from the wall outlet for 30 seconds and plug it back into the wall outlet. Then reconnect the charger to your Chromebook.
5190s are notorious for “accidentally” not charging - try charging in both USB-C ports and try flipping the charger connector upside down too (it’s reversible). Once an orange LED lights up on the side, they may take a few minutes to start anyway if completely uncharged. If your Chromebook still won’t charge, contact your school librarian or RBUSD IT Dept.
If the Chromebook was put into sleep mode (i.e. the lid was closed while a session was active) and it has not been used for several days or weeks, it is likely that the battery has drained down to the point that it cannot be recharged again. The classic behavior for this problem is that the charging LED turns white, then red, then goes out, whichever side you try to charge on. In this case, contact your school librarian or RBUSD IT Dept.
This can be identified by black spiderweb lines over some/all of screen OR glitching OR the screen is almost completely dark and won’t brighten.
Contact your school librarian or RBUSD IT Dept.
Follow the instructions for How To Perform a Hard Reset, then restart Chromebook.
On 5190s, this will resolve the problem where the following keys (and ONLY these keys) stop working at the same time: 1,q,a,z,3,e,d,c,4,r,f,v,5,t,g,b.
If functionality isn’t restored, or the behavior repeats soon after, contact your school librarian or RBUSD IT Dept.
Follow the instructions for How To Perform a Hard Reset, then restart Chromebook.
On 5190s, this MAY resolve problems with not connecting to wifi, at least temporarily.
If functionality isn’t restored, or the behavior repeats soon after, contact your school librarian or RBUSD IT Dept.
Follow the instructions for How To Perform a Hard Reset, then restart Chromebook.
If functionality isn’t restored, try pressing the ESC key and drumming your fingers on the touchpad for 10 seconds simultaneously. Follow the instructions for How To Perform a Quick Reset.
If functionality still isn’t restored, or the behavior repeats soon after, contact your school librarian or RBUSD IT Dept.
If you still have the key and parts, it can sometimes be put back together, but usually the key is much looser and prone to falling off again.
If the key is still a problem, contact your school librarian or RBUSD IT Dept.
Small chips and scratches are acceptable wear and tear, but if the hinge is broken (not just chipped) or the case is severely compromised and internal wiring is showing, contact your school librarian or RBUSD IT Dept.
This problem often occurs because an internal pin is bent inside the headphone jack, or a piece of the headphone connector has snapped off inside the jack.
Broken connectors can sometimes be removed using a pair of needlenose pliers, or a pin.
If you can’t resolve the issue, contact your school librarian or RBUSD IT Dept.
Click on the status area (at the bottom right of the screen) and make sure that the audio level bar is pointing to the headphones, not the internal speaker, and is set to an acceptable volume level.
Please be aware that not all headphones, including certain types of Bluetooth/gaming headphones, are compatible with our Chromebooks. Please use simple wired headphones or earbuds in the event of difficulties connecting.
If you can’t resolve the issue, contact your school librarian or RBUSD IT Dept.
Follow the instructions for How To Perform a Hard Reset, then restart Chromebook.
Press the Search (magnifying glass) key on the left side of the keyboard and start typing “Camera” into the search field. Click on the Camera icon that appears.
If you get a message that says “Camera not available”, or you only see a black window with a small camera icon in the middle, contact your school librarian or RBUSD IT Dept.
Test that the camera is working properly by recording a short video with the Camera app - record yourself saying “Testing 1 2 3”. Make sure that the microphone is ON while you record. Play the video back to make sure that you can see and hear yourself clearly. If you can’t, contact your school librarian or RBUSD IT Dept.
If trying to open the camera from a website (e.g. Zoom or FlipGrid), make sure that you have granted that site access to your camera. When you try to open the camera for the first time, you should see a little pop-up message that says “<Site> wants to: Use camera” and two buttons that say Allow and Block. Click on the Allow button to let the site work with your camera. When a website is allowed to access the camera, a little camera icon should appear at the right end of the address bar.
If the app/site is currently blocked from using the camera, you may see a little camera icon with a red and white cross on the far right of the address bar (see picture below). If you click on this, you will see the little popup below (or something similar). Click on the little camera icon and change the block settings to “Always allow <app/site> to access your camera”, then click “Done”. Then try opening the camera again.
If you can’t resolve the issue, contact your school librarian or RBUSD IT Dept.
Click on the status area (at the bottom right of the screen) and then click on the right-arrow at the right end of the audio level bar. Make sure the microphone is set to an acceptable volume level (usually in the middle of the bar). .
Click on the status area (at the bottom right of the screen) and click on the Accessibility button.
Select Dictation. A little microphone icon will appear to the left of the status area.
Click on any text field currently open on your screen (e.g. the address or search bar of the Chrome browser, or a Google document).
Click on the little microphone icon to the left of the status area (it should turn white).
Say “Testing 1 2 3”.
If words appear in the text field, your microphone is working OK.
Confirm that the microphone is working with the Camera app by recording a short test video of yourself speaking and making sure that you can hear sound when you play back the video.
If it is not working, contact your school librarian or RBUSD IT Dept.
