This question is asked a lot. Is softball harder than baseball? We believe it is for many reasons. The first reason is because of the difference in the size of the fields. Softball players are closer to the pitching mound when hitting unlike baseball, which gives baseball players more time to react. Story Heckman said, “I do think softball is harder because softball pitches are way different than baseball pitches.” The second reason we think softball is harder is because of the size and weight of a softball making it harder to hit it out of the field, unlike a baseball which would be extremely easy to hit it out, especially with a typically longer bat. Our third reason is that pitching and throwing with a bigger ball is harder than with a smaller ball.
The first and most important reason is that a softball field and a baseball field have different sizes which affects the way they play. A softball field is around 60 feet in the baseline while a baseball field is 90 feet in the baseline. With a smaller field, it could seem easy but the pitching mound on a softball field is 40-43 feet away from the home plate while a baseball pitching mound is 60 feet, which gives the baseball players more time to react to the ball leaving the pitcher's hand than softball players. Khloee Wykoff said, “You have a shorter reaction time with closer pitching.”
The second reason is that the weight and size of a softball compared to a baseball is very different and can make the game harder. Because of the weight, the ball could be harder to throw and cause bad catches. With the throws being off with the weight, the fielders could have a hard time getting outs. Mrs. Ayer, A softball coach, said, “Other than hitting and pitching it's the same, so softball players have a harder time hitting.”
The third reason is that we pitch with a bigger ball and throw underhand. But with baseball, you have to pitch with an overhand throw and a smaller ball which is way easier. The ball and pitch can be harder to swing at or get on the bases more. softball pitchers have to make sure that they release the underhand throw at the right time or the ball could go way out of the box, too high up, or too far down which takes a lot of skill.
Although these sports are similar, they are very different. Some sports take more practice and that makes the plays difficult, so that's why softball is harder than baseball.
