“You’re a wizard, Harry.” The English Academic Super Bowl is rumbling through the year, with none but Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone as the book they’ll be studying! They (the EASB) will also be learning poems written by Louise Gluck. Wren Fergusen, a student at EJHS, says that, “So far we have read all of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and we have read 6/10 of the poems.”
Many of the EASB participants are enjoying the club-but for different reasons (all good ones, mind). For Benjamin Chupp, it’s the interactiveness, for Wren Fergusen, it’s the trivia-like action, and for Brandon Rains, it’s the making new friends. Alana Armstong, another student, says that it’s, “ splitting up into houses and reading our books (or poems) for the competition.” Multiple students enjoy the book theme around the club, and that is why they joined. But you don’t have to like books to enjoy the EASB. Some people prefer math by a long shot, but prefer doing English Super Bowl because of the way it’s run!
A nice thing about EASB is how it’s a good mix of work and play. Most students agree on this fact. Mr. Anspaugh keeps them on task, but lets them have fun as well. They play a lot of Gimkits and Kahoots as they study. They are usually themed on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Louise Gluck poems, or both! The way that EASB is run is perfect for a club.
In years past, the EASB has read different books, completely different from Harry Potter and the Louise Gluck poems. Last year, they read a book called The Twelfth Night, and the year before that, they read a book called Calvin. And surely there will be more book varieties in the years to come.
The English Academic Super Bowl is very different from ELA, so even if you hate English class (which might be what has held you back from trying), you would probably enjoy this club! All of the participants enjoy it, and you also may like it too!
