With the year coming to an end, there is something coming up that has taken the attention of every student in EJHS. Summer Break! While we come closer and closer, students get more and more ready to have this break and start brainstorming ways to spend this fun vacation. Summer break is very exciting for students, especially after having a long year of schoolwork and hard assignments. Although it has been a fun year, it can be tiring for lots of students so this adds even more importance to these breaks. Most students are excited, but also nervous about the school year following summer break.
Students are very excited to get a break after the school year, most likely because they get to have a break and enjoy having some free time. Eleanor Mcelroy, a student at EJHS, felt especially ready for summer break. When asked if she was excited for summer break, she says, “100 percent.” Lots of students have been waiting for this all year. Sleep is also a reason why students feel excited for summer break. Most EJHS students get little to no sleep, due to waking up early to go to school. This is very bad for people’s health and is even more unhealthy for people of young age. Summer break allows students to do their personal activities and make new passions that they are not capable of doing in class. This can also help with connecting to peers who have similar interests.
This is a graph showing the average hours of sleep for people throughout the months. You can see in the graph that the sleep average goes up during the summer months.
After a year of long classes and tiring assignments, students can now take a break and relax while having fun. And not just for students. Teachers are also excited to have a break with their own lives out of teaching. Marsi Jones, a social studies, civics, and current events teacher at EJHS, says, “Teachers are kind of like nascar drivers; we’re just going going going and we don’t get a chance to slow down, so it gives teachers a chance to slow down and just be involved with their own life.” This is especially true when we are counting down the days until break. The end of the school year is when all of the finals and tests come out, which can be overwhelming for students.

The sad part is, after our summer break, we have to start yet another school year. Although the new school year can be tough, it can also give new opportunities including new classes and clubs. Students have varying opinions about the next year coming up so fast, but most students feel both anxious and eager for the next school year. Laura Chupp, a journalism student at EJHS, has mixed feelings about the new school year as well. “I’m excited but also a little bit nervous.” she says.
Overall, students and teachers are excited to get a break and are mostly ready for the next school year. School can be stressful, but these types of breaks will help because you are are able to take a rest and do fun activities. You might even be able to go on a trip or vacation. And once summer starts after May 22, make the most out of your summer break and have fun!
