Over the winter, it's common for schools to have e-learning days when the weather is too bad for school. However it's also common for the school to call for a two hour delay, but do we really need two hour delays, or should we just call for a whole e-learning day? Read on to find out if e-learning days are worth it.
First of all, why do we have two hour delays? Typically we have two hour delays when the temperature is too cold but it is suspected to get warmer later in the morning. Unlike e-learning you have no online assignment and the buses still come to pick you up.
"I think we should have two hour delays because currently we only have one snow day left and if we use that we will have to make up work at the end of the year," Emerson DeSalle
Now that you are aware of what a two hour delay is, we can answer: should we have it, or should we just have e-learning? Well, lots of students may just want e-learning so that they donāt have to go to school. However, we are only able to have 3 e-learning days. After we have had 3 e-learning days we transfer to snow days. The difference between snow days and e-learning days is that, on an e-learning day we have online assignments while on snow days we donāt. This may seem awesome, but while we don't have school or school work, every snow day we have gets added to the end of the year. This means that the more snow days we have the longer it can take for the end of the year to arrive. Unlike this situation, when we have two hour delays, we still go to school, meaning nothing gets added to the end of the year.
After reading that you may think that two hour delays are necessary, but there's actually a whole other side to the two hour delay arguments. The whole reason we have two hour delays is to allow the snow to melt, the temperature to rise and the streets to clear. However, can all of that happen in just two hours? Well, on Jan 24, 2024 from 6am-9pm (When a two hour delay would be) the temperature only rose five degrees. A five degrees difference usually wouldnāt be enough to melt snow or heat a bus. However, a two hour delay is enough time for the snow truck to shovel snow off the streets.
On January 30, 2024 from six to nine the temperature didn't change at all.
So, now that you have that information, should we have two hour delays? Well, that's up to you. Fill out the form to share your thoughts on the subject and to share if you enjoyed this article.
