Have you ever wondered what your peer's favorite classes are? As the school year comes to a close, many students here at EJHS have formed strong opinions over their new classes for this school year, and some classes have turned out to be a very popular pick for most people, as many say it's very enjoyable or even their favorite class. In this article, you can find out the top five most popular classes that EJHS students took this year or in the past that have still remained a favorite. From Math to Current Events, many people had varying opinions.
The fifth most popular class is Civics, which was a popular choice among the people surveyed. Some of the students who chose Civics as their favorite class mentioned that it was a great way to learn more about their country and its laws, or enjoyed it because they already were well-informed and enjoyed the new information that they had learned from that class. Out of the students who took the survey, about 10% of people chose Civics as their overall favorite class out of the other available options. Laura Chupp, a 6th grader at EJHS said, “I enjoy civics because I enjoy learning about our government and it helps keep me well informed about it.”

The fourth most popular class on this list is Art, which was a slightly more popular pick than Civics. Many students enjoy Art as it allows them to use their creativity and self-expression. Art was also a popular pick due to the fact that you can learn different artistic skills like molding clay and different drawing techniques. Art increases social skills and engagement among students and can boost creativity. Art classes can help students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and other skills like social engagement and creativity which can be beneficial for their academic and personal growth. Some students in the survey said that the reason they chose art is because it’s fun, and some others explained that it helps them learn not only about how to create different forms of art but also about the culture and how certain types of art eventually came to be.
Choir is the third most popular class out of the five, with a similar amount of people choosing it than Art. Choir seemed to be a prominent choice in students' favorite classes. It’s also beneficial in many ways as it helps students learn choreography and synchronicity in singing. Charlotte Lucas, a 6th grader at EJHS says, “It’s fun and it helps you with your vocals.” There are also different types of choir classes, one of the most popular being Show Choir, where dancing and other sorts of performance arts get more involved. Another prevalent reason students chose this class is because they said it was fun. “I enjoy choir because choir just was always there for me. I feel free whenever I have choir, or just singing in general,” says Kendallyn Mcquire, a 7th grader at EJHS.

Physical Education was the second most prevailing choice. PE has a lot of benefits, as it encourages exercise. Research shows that exercise improves school performance, and increases focusing and learning factors in students. By being able to engage in a variety of physical activities, students can also develop essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and communication. Similar to the other classes, many students find Physical Education fun and entertaining, because they get to learn about and play a variety of sports along with the rest of the course. Callen Robertson, a 6th grader at EJHS says, “PE is the best class because it goes by so fast and I never want it to be over.” Another student expressed that they enjoy the activities that happen in that class, specifically being able to run as it lets them have a bit more freedom in their opinion.
The most popular choice out of the available classes to choose from was Journalism. Journalism is an interesting class as it helps boost student's creative writing skills by letting them write for the school newspaper. One student explained that they struggled a bit with their own writing and Journalism has helped them with that. Studies have shown that students who take a journalism class have better writing and grammar skills than other students, which is just another way that Journalism is beneficial to the students who are taking or have taken that class. The class gives students an opportunity to write about things from major world events to just simple arguments about candy, and the best part is other people get to read what they wrote. Other students explained that they just enjoyed writing the articles, while others explained that they liked to collaborate with other students to write a joint article, an example being a Colts Throwdown or collab article.
Generally speaking, these are the five most popular classes chosen by a group of students surveyed. Some honorable mentions include Current Events, which was the sixth most popular choice. Madigan Flynn, a seventh grader said the reason she chose this class as her favorite was because “Mrs. Jones is the GOAT!!” Next was band, which was seventh, Health and Wellness in eighth, and College and Careers with ninth place overall.
