Barbie is an iconic doll that has been played with by kids since 1959. Barbie is a worldwide fashion icon that has helped people know that their dreams can come true. Throughout the years Barbie has had many different designs and clothes. She has gone from wearing only a simple bathing suit to having a whole wardrobe of clothes. Here is how she went from being just a doll to being a worldwide fashion icon.
1950s
In 1959, the first ever Barbie doll was created. Before Barbie, the only dolls for girls to play with were ones that had made them roleplay motherhood. So when Barbie was created it gave girls a chance to play with something that didnāt portray motherhood. Barbie had made her first debut at the New York Toy Fair. The first ever Barbie doll was wearing a black and white striped swimsuit with a ponytail. Barbie's appearance was based off of Bild Lilli, a German doll that was created in the early 1950s. Barbieās name came from Barbara Handler, the daughter of Mattel.
