As you may know, AI and advanced technologies are constantly evolving and have become a big part of modern-day life. Many people often wonder if we should be scared of these developments since they have a record of replacing people’s jobs and could quite possibly start wars. But are robots and AI a real concern?
According to The Standard, a recent study shows,“ Half of all AI researchers believe there is at least a 10 percent chance of AI causing human extinction, with many warning that robots could be capable of human-like goals such as attaining high political office, starting new religions or even playing God.” Although this may seem impossible to happen, if it becomes too advanced and falls into the wrong hands these are some of the many examples of what could happen
While people think that the time is currently far away from AI taking over, in some ways it already has. Robots are designed not to have a consciousness, self-awareness, and intentions like humans do. If this were to change, and robots were to develop the same thought processes and intentions as humans, they would pose a more serious risk in the world.
Since they are programmed not to have human-like intentions, AI cannot demonstrate emotions or perform tasks that humans are unable to do. Take Chat GTP for example, this is an AI used to make conversation yet it does not communicate in the way a human would. Because of this factor, the program can do many tasks humans cannot do, for it takes information from hundreds upon hundreds of sources and has that stored in their cloud. If you were to ask Chat GTP to solve the hardest math problem or write the longest essay, it would be able to do that within seconds. It is also proven that hackers have been able to use this information to do cyber-crimes such as research to develop malicious software tools such as many different viruses.
Many job openings have also been replaced by robots doing the tasks, but fewer than you may think. Sociology professor, Eric Dahlin states, “Overall, our perceptions of robots taking over is greatly exaggerated ….. Those who hadn’t lost jobs overestimated by about double, and those who had lost jobs overestimated by about three times.” Robots aren’t always taking over peoples’ jobs, in most cases, workplaces will integrate both humans and robots to create the most productive work environment. A good example of this would be Airplane Manufacturing, robots will paint airplane wings while humans load and unload the paint buckets. In doing this they can get something that would take a human hours to do, in 30 minutes.
Although this is true, scientists have predicted that AI will be more likely to take over even more jobs in the future. But sometimes the question is not how many jobs will be taken over, but whether these advancements in technology will lead to a future where many peoples’ skills and abilities will be undervalued, which would leave them with no access to high-paying jobs where they would provide value.
In Conclusion, robots and AI have the capability to take over the world eventually, we are not in a place where they are able to think and do things on their own. As time goes on robots and AI will become increasingly advanced but there will be measures to which they are allowed to advance. So all together, robots and AI will not take over the world. At least for now……..
