Have you ever seen your parents doing chores, looking like they might need some help? Well I know I have, and being a parent is already hard enough, so why not jump in and help them. I have some reasons why kids having chores should be a daily thought for parents. It is important for kids to have chores because they teach responsibility, they teach teamwork, and they lead to a good work ethic. Keep reading to see why kids should have chores.
One reason kids should have chores is because they teach responsibility. Giving your kids assignments like cleaning their room or doing their laundry will help them not rely on others as much. They will see that you don’t always put the weight of your responsibilities on others. Poppy Bishop says, “I think that chores teach stability and responsibility.” It is also helpful for them to be able to plan, because then they will have more time management. An example is if they set an order of what chores they will do and when then they will be more prepared to manage them.
Another reason kids should have chores is because they teach teamwork. Some chores require more than one person, so you always have to be prepared to work with others. Teamwork means that you are willing to work with others when doing things like chores. In other circumstances you would need to stick with your promise of working with someone and using teamwork while doing that. If you back out of doing something with someone else, then it could make it harder for someone to complete the task that you were planning on doing together.
The last reason kids should have chores is because it teaches good work ethic. Having chores as well as balancing other responsibilities in life can lead to you being very successful in your job and family life. Stephine Ayer says, "Kids should have chores because it teaches life skills, making sure that they don’t depend on others for money, and that they are able to put work in for their family.” Having a reward along with your chores such as an allowance can help them understand the order of working and earning. When your kids realize that working can lead to earning money, then when they get older they might want to do some “jobs” just earning money at home.
