Should you Be Allowed to Leave Your Locker Open?
By: Laura Chupp
When you walk through the hall, have you ever seen someone’s locker open? If you did, you might not know that the locker’s owner is making a choice that might get them in danger or, possibly expelled. I don’t think you should leave your locker open. My first reason is that someone could very easily take your supplies. My second reason is that you might end up in trouble for it. My third reason is that it is dangerous.
My first reason is quite simple; if you leave your locker open, someone might take your stuff.
“Some guy had dug through my locker but another girl caught him,” says a 6th grade student at EJHS who once left her locker open.
This proves my point. It causes problems. The more that your locker is open, the more people might be tempted to steal your things. You may lose your phone this way if you have one. Phones are not a small thing to lose. An average phone costs $1, 200. Leaving your locker with a phone in it open is like leaving an open locker with $1, 200 in it.
My second reason is that you might end up in trouble. Someone could take an important paper and just when you need it, it will be gone. If you can’t turn in a paper, your grade will drop, if your grade drops too far, you lose fun activities, if you lose fun activities, you lose opportunities. All this can happen from leaving your locker open.
My third reason is that you could be in danger. It may not seem like a big deal right now, but anything could happen. Someone could slide a gun into your locker for all you know. You might find a knife just sitting there. A cigarette could be waiting inside. Danger could be lurking nearby. Along with these being dangerous, you could be framed for these and expelled. Study.com also lists having a weapon as a way to be expelled from school. Even though this is the most serious reason, it is very unlikely to happen. Don’t worry, but close your locker.
So, are you curious about how many lockers are left open in EJHS? On an average day, 6 lockers are open in the 6th grade hallway, 10 lockers are open in the hallway with the south bathroom, 11 lockers are open in the 7th and 8th grade hallways combined, and 2 lockers are open in the north bathroom hallway.
Why might you leave your locker open anyway? One of the top reasons I’ve heard is that it makes things easier. While this is acceptable reasoning, it is still not safe. If you leave your locker open for this reason, you should probably reconsider if that's the right thing to do.
Overall, leaving your locker open is a very risky choice. I’ve only listed some of the dangers that could come. Leaving your locker open could result in the worse than for the better. So be safe, not sorry! Overall, I will share a little advice, be safe and close your locker!
