Have you ever had to read a book for class but felt uncomfortable about it? You can’t just say no, but you are going to have a rough time. What if the burden could come off your back? What if you didn’t have to? I think that making kids read a book for class is just wrong. I think this because it can make students uncomfortable, it can change your actions, and books aren’t something that everyone likes.
My first reason is that it can make students uncomfortable. If you read something you think is creepy, weird, or something else, it is probably uncomfortable to read. “I think it's unfair to require students to read books that they may not enjoy or understand,” says Greta Vagedes, a student at EJHS. I completely agree. Why put these things in your head? If you want a list of good books, click here: https://goodandbeautifulbooklist.com/book-list/?show_per_page=30&sort=title_asc&older_favorite=yes
Jenny Phillips, the founder of a school curriculum has something to say about it, “Families are being destroyed.
Students enjoy reading their own books.
Bps.org.uk says, “research shows that the beliefs, behaviors, and attitudes of our favorite characters can influence our own.”
It’s true. My second reason is that books can change your actions. If you read books about depression, you might be depressed. An 8th grade student says, “Some of the books are gross, and others have a lot of profanities.”
Would you want to become that?
My third and final reason is that not everyone wants to read books. I love reading books. You could say that. But, despite that, I know that books aren’t everyones’ favorite.
“Some people really are just not into books and it's not fair for them,” says Katelyn Ripley, a 6th grader at EJHS.
Teachwire.net thinks that forcing children to finish books they don't like won't make them better readers. You should think the same.
Overall, it makes sense not to make us read books for class. I think this because it can make students uncomfortable, it can change your actions, and books aren’t something that everyone likes. Because of all this, I don’t think we should need to have required books.
