The range of customization on chromebooks is very limited, but it wasn’t always that way. At one time we could change our profiles on google classroom, change what our google chrome color/picture was. People used weird photos and at the time didn’t realize it but many took advantage of being able to customize it. That made the school think something like, Oh we should stop them from doing this; and so they stopped us from customizing our chromebooks. So many people did not like that decision, which brings the question: should students be able to customize their chromebook. Why should they bring back customization? Well for one it’s fun to customize things how you want, secondly people want to have more control, third it helps people express themselves even if it’s just on a chromebook.
Customization can lead to reducing boredom. It is something that people actually enjoy doing! 5 out of 6 say that it is really fun to do and they enjoy doing it. Related to this, Julia Schliesser, a 6th grade student at EJHS says, “...I like to decorate things the way I like it…” These changes even though they are very small, they are good ones. 83.3% (5 out of 6) of EJHS students say that even though it would be a small change it would be 100% worth it.
This is what it looks at now and what it used to look like.
Feeling like you have more control over your belongings is a big thing for tons of people. ZZ Welding, another 6th grade EJHS student says, “I want to feel like I have more control over my chromebook…” With having control, Maggie Johnson says, “Makes me feel more comfortable and in charge of myself.” (Around 66% of EJHS students say that they would like to have more control over their computer). It seems like it's not just wanting to have control but it also makes students feel comfortable; but without being comfortable with it is possible to come with issues.
Customizing wallpaper is one of the only things we can customize freely
People expressing themselves helps them be more confident in life; Finding out their style and what makes them feel good. Half of the people who filled out the form agree with this. Maggie Johnson, a 6th grader at EJHS agrees with this and says, “It makes me happy and comfortable.” She said how it makes her happy and feel comfortable which is something every student should feel or at least have the chance to.
These are all the reasons why students should be able to customize their chromebooks again! While all these reasons are good, fill out the form so you can answer how you feel about this topic.
