As of writing this article, Edgewood Junior High School has recently blocked every single YouTube video off of the platform. Yes I know that Edgewood might unblock YouTube, but this article is just for entertainment. While this ban was active, it has caused a problem with people's’ happiness and concentration. This article will take a look into who the ban could cause problems to, and ultimately answer the question on whether Edgewood should keep YouTube unblocked.
Students at Edgewood were undoubtedly the most affected when Edgewood banned YouTube, with a staggering 17 out of 18 or about 94% of people that I asked said that they hated that the school banned YouTube. Seeing the statistics, we can see that most people want YouTube to be brought back, and are forced to not have access to YouTube. Forced compliance could lead to extreme unhappiness. According to mayoclinic.com, extreme unhappiness can have a bunch of negative side effects, such as tiredness and lack of ability, a loss of interest in things that could have once made you happy, and just an overall sense of sadness and emptiness. This is terrible for students who need to be productive every hour of the school day.
In a survey with 18 people, 17 people (or about 94%) said that YouTube should stay unblocked.
Before Edgewood blocked every single YouTube video, about every music video was unblocked. Now, after the ban, no one can listen to music easily on YouTube. About everyone that said that they didn’t like that EJHS mentioned the fact that they cannot listen to music anymore. Mason McCarty, a sixth grader at EJHS addressed the situation by stating that he absolutely despised the fact that he no longer has the ability to listen to music. “Listening to music was always a better way for me to focus,” he says. “Now that I can’t, it’s harder for me to concentrate on my assignments.” As you can see, students being able to focus on assignments is very important, because it allows them to stay on task and get their work done. Now that they can’t, they might slip academically and cause them to have bad grades.
With the very obvious fact that students are not happy with 94% of the students I surveyed saying that the school should unblock YouTube, and multiple students saying that the ban has caused them to be unable to focus and affect their overall concentration which could cause them to lack academically, it’s very obvious that EJHS should unblock YouTube. But what do you think? Fill out the form below to tell us whether or not we should have YouTube!
