Dogs, cats, hamsters, and even fish, what is one thing they all have in common? They are all loved pets! One thing most kids have in common is that they want to have a class pet!
First, Pets can increase sensitivity and awareness of the feelings and needs of others. According to Pets in the Classroom, “Even kids with no exposure to animals or nature in their home environment can see, feel, touch and make connections to the wide world of animals. Observing and caring for an animal instills a sense of responsibility and respect for life.” With class pets kids could become more responsible and increase their empathy for other people and animals, possibly helping them make more friends and helping them learn important life skills they will use forever.
Second, PRNewswire states, “The studies show that when there are animals present in classroom settings, students start paying attention and sitting still.” This means that kids who are more fidgety or can’t pay attention might be able to concentrate better with a class pet. With just this kids could end up with better grades and test scores, allowing them to have a better chance at getting into a good college or if they do good enough, maybe even a scholarship.
Last, Pets can also help with anxiety and relieve stress. According to healthdirect.gov.au, “They can help you relax and cope better when under high pressure and in uncertain times and situations.” That means it might help kids who get stressed not be stressed as often or not as much during tests or quizzes.
With all of these ways they can help, class pets would overall boost kids' experiences in school and will help them with important things in life like empathy. Thank you for reading my article and next time you go to school ask your teacher about getting a class pet!
P.S. Dogs are the best
