Winter guard season is about to begin and tryouts have begun! For those who don’t know winter guard is a winter and inside version of color guard. Color guard is an outside summer version with a marching band.
Auditions for the sport were held on Monday, October 30, 2023 and Wednesday, November 1, 2023 from 5-7 pm in the EJHS band room. There the auditionees were taught the basics of winter guard including steps, dance, timing, and finding the rhythm in different songs. After that the final auditions on Wednesday were held consisting of mostly the same and the more fun side of winter guard. After that a very similar audition was held with a little less people than the first. After the last audition all people who came to the final one were accepted into winter guard
A poll was taken and most 6th graders at EJHS were not familiar with the subject of winter guard. Yet after these people completed the assessment some grew an opinion about winter guard. Including what they like and dislike about it. Some people even became interested in trying it. Sawyer Hancock claims “I think winter guard is cool that they get to dance with flags”
Tanna Hawk, an experienced winter guard competitor says that “It was the most challenging, yet the most rewarding experience I have ever been a part of.” She competed for Edgewood throughout the whole year. She ended up loving it and did it throughout high school too. You can compete in winter guard with your peers too. As long as you have a team consisting of at least 5 to 40 competitors. The competition season in Indiana for winter guard is October to March. Winter guard is considered the sport of inside color guard according to WGI (Winter Guard INternational).
To sum up, winter guard is a very cool sport with many people interested in trying it out. The EJHS winter guard team will definitely have a good year with their coaches and new members. So to set off our new year of winter guard season for EJHS, best of luck you’ll do great this season!
