Valentines Day, or Feast of Saint Valentine, was originally a holiday celebrated by Christians and ancient Romans. One of the legends was that Valentine was a priest in the third century and when he heard that Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage to young men, he would not let this injustice stand. He defied Claudius and held weddings for young lovers in secret behind the emperor's back. When his actions were found out, he was ordered to be killed. Other people also think that Valentine of Terni, who was a bishop, was the true reason for the holiday.
Lots of people give chocolates and flowers on Valentine's day and sometimes gifts. But what do people receive the most on this holiday? BobBooks says, “Although cards are usually given in combination with other gifts like flowers or chocolates, more than 52% of consumers will present their loved one with a Valentine’s Day card.” Another very popular gift given on Valentine's day is personalized gifts such as personalized cards, a photo album, or a photo calendar. A heart shaped chocolate box is also a great gift cliche to give to your loved one.
This February, Edgewood Junior High School will be having a Valentine's day dance! The theme is “A Night in Paris”. It will be on Friday, February 9 from 2:30 to 5:00. You can dress up or just come in your regular clothes. It will take place in the gym and in the school cafeteria. They will be serving candy, pizza, drinks, and glow items at the concessions. It’s going to be a really good time! Jaselyn Gracia says, “ I’m really excited for the dance because I’m going to go with my pookie wookie vanilla cyclone with extra vanilla.”
