On April 3, 2024, around 11:05, the entire school district went into a “stay-put” / “shelter in place”. EIS and EPS went into a “shelter in place” while EJHS and EHS went into a “stay-put”. This happened due to a bomb threat, but after thorough investigations, the police determined there was no real threat.
The intermediate school.
When EIS was put under a shelter-in-place, some of the students were eating lunch.
At EJHS, the day continued as normal, except students couldn't leave the classroom without permission from the office, and at lunch students had to raise their hand to go to the bathroom. The same was true for EHS.
On April 3rd, The Ellettsville police made a public statement:
"Today, the Ellettsville Police Department responded to a bomb threat made by telephone concerning Edgewood Intermediate School. The Ellettsville Police Department was assisted in securing the grounds and searching the buildings of the schools within the Richland-Bean Blossom School Corporation by members of the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, Bloomington Police Department, and Indiana University Police Department K-9 Unit. The Federal Bureau of Investigation assisted in the investigation and were able to determine that the school had been the victim of a ‘swatting’ incident. The school day resumed as usual. The investigation is still ongoing. There is no threat to public safety at this time.”
A third grader at EIS said, “It was kind of like an indoor recess in the cafeteria but we couldn’t eat even though it was lunchtime.” She also said, “Some kids were crying and were upset.”
In conclusion, the stay-put/shelter-in-place on April 3, 2024, was a scary experience for everyone involved. However, the response of law enforcement officers and the cooperation of the school district ensured that everyone was safe, and the threat was determined to be a hoax. Nothing had happened and everything was fine.
